Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler strikes out 10 after All-Star snub comments

Zack Wheeler, 'disrespected' by All-Star snub, strikes out 10 Tigers a day after calling MLB's replacement invitation a 'pity party'

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler delivered a strong performance against the Detroit Tigers, striking out 10 batters in a 5-0 victory. This outing occurred a day after Wheeler publicly expressed his feelings of being “disrespected” by his initial exclusion from the MLB All-Star Game and declined an invitation to join the National League team as a replacement.

Wheeler completed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks before exiting the game after 96 pitches. His day concluded with a swinging strikeout of Detroit cleanup hitter Riley Greene. This marks the second time in his career that Wheeler has achieved double-digit strikeouts in three consecutive starts, following a 14-strikeout game against the Cincinnati Reds and a 10-strikeout performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

All-Star Disappointment and Agent’s Defense

The pitcher’s recent comments to reporters on Saturday highlighted his frustration with the All-Star selection process. Wheeler stated, “They disrespected me, so I’m not going to participate. I don’t need a pity party. I don’t need somebody saying, ‘He’s had major surgery. Look at him now.’ I don’t need that.” He emphasized his intent to return to his previous level of play, or even surpass it, after undergoing thoracic outlet decompression surgery.

Wheeler’s agent, B.B. Abbott, echoed these sentiments, criticizing MLB’s decision to omit Wheeler from the All-Star roster. Abbott described the situation as “tone deaf,” especially given Wheeler’s strong return to form after a significant medical procedure. The pitcher had a thrombolysis procedure to remove a blood clot near his right shoulder, followed by another surgery and an extensive recovery period. Abbott noted that Wheeler’s focus throughout his recovery was on returning to win a World Series and a Cy Young award, demonstrating his unwavering belief in his ability to return to an elite level.

Abbott, who has been an agent for over 25 years, stated that he rarely speaks on the record about his players during a season but felt compelled to do so in Wheeler’s case. He believes that MLB has shown a “real lack of acknowledgement” for Wheeler’s journey and his return to excellence after an injury that many players do not fully recover from at an elite level. Abbott highlighted that the league could have named Wheeler to the initial roster and then replaced him, allowing him to be honored at Citizens Bank Park, his home stadium, during the All-Star ceremonies.

Wheeler’s Performance and League Recognition

Despite the All-Star snub, Wheeler’s performance this season has been notable. In 15 starts, he has maintained a 2.13 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP, accumulating 108 strikeouts and 22 walks over 93 innings pitched. He finishes the first half of the season with a 10-1 record as a starter. His ERA and WHIP would represent career lows if sustained over a full season. Wheeler also ranks first among starters in fWAR since 2017.

The Phillies organization, including teammates, coaches, and staff, expressed disappointment regarding Wheeler’s exclusion, having witnessed his resurgence firsthand. Abbott suggested that Wheeler is often overlooked due to his consistent, understated approach to the game, describing him as “boring” in his dedication to his job. He believes that while the Phillies organization acknowledges Wheeler’s contributions, MLB has not. Wheeler’s teammate, Cristopher Sánchez, is scheduled to start for the National League in the All-Star Game, which will be played at Citizens Bank Park.

Wheeler’s current contract is for $40 million this year and next, making him one of the highest-paid pitchers in the sport. His agent emphasized that the issue is not about Wheeler’s compensation but about the recognition of his achievements, especially after overcoming significant health challenges. Joe Ryan, an All-Star starter for the Minnesota Twins, cited Wheeler as a model for adapting and maintaining performance with age, calling him “arguably the best pitcher in the game the last five years.”

The All-Star Game is scheduled to be played on Tuesday.
