Stefon Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler, remains a free agent as training camps approach, despite coming off his seventh 1,000-yard season in the past eight years. His recent comments regarding his standing among wide receivers have generated discussion about potential landing spots.
Diggs stated his belief that “you can’t name a better No. 2 receiver” than him currently. He acknowledged that he is no longer a No. 1 wide receiver but argued he surpasses any No. 2 in the NFL. This assertion comes after he was released by the Patriots in March due to a cost-cutting measure.
Diggs’s Perspective on Receiver Roles
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Diggs elaborated on his view of the league’s receiver landscape. He suggested that while most teams have their No. 1 wide receiver for the season, there are only about seven “real [No.] 1s” in the league. He challenged observers to name a No. 2 receiver who is better than him, considering their compensation.
Despite his confidence, some top receiving duos in the league, such as Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins for the Bengals, and CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens for the Cowboys, might present a different perspective. However, Diggs’s performance last season, which included 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, indicates he still contributes significantly on the field.
The Patriots replaced Diggs with A.J. Brown and also signed Romeo Doubs. Diggs’s release occurred despite his strong performance. He was found not guilty in May of an assault charge related to a pay dispute, and the NFL closed its review last month.
Potential Destinations for the Veteran Receiver
Several teams could potentially benefit from adding a player of Diggs’s caliber. The New York Giants have been active in signing free agent receivers this offseason, including Odell Beckham Jr. If Malik Nabers is not available by Week 1, Diggs could be considered. His addition could strengthen the team’s offense, which has previously struggled with a lack of playmaking receivers.
The Los Angeles Chargers, while seemingly confident in their current receiver group, drafted Brenen Thompson in the fourth round, suggesting future considerations beyond Quentin Johnston, who is in a contract year. Diggs could elevate their passing offense, providing Justin Herbert with another reliable option.
The Washington Commanders could also be a destination. With Jayden Daniels potentially returning to top form, surrounding him with talented playmakers like Diggs could maximize his potential. Diggs, a Maryland native, might also welcome the opportunity to play closer to his home state.
A return to the Buffalo Bills is another possibility. With DJ Moore and Khalil Shakir likely as the top two receivers, Diggs’s familiarity with the team and quarterback Josh Allen, with whom he led the NFL in receiving yards in 2020, could be an advantage under new head coach Joe Brady.
Finally, the Kansas City Chiefs could be a fit. Aside from Travis Kelce, no current Chiefs player has matched Diggs’s production. He could emerge as a significant option for Patrick Mahomes, particularly as Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice continue to develop.
Diggs remains unsigned, and it would be unexpected if he is not on an NFL roster when the regular season begins in September.
