Cincinnati Reds’ Greene dominates Cubs hitters in 4-0 victory

Hunter Greene of the Cincinnati Reds delivered a dominant performance against the Chicago Cubs, leading his team to a 4-0 victory in the first game of a three-game series. Greene allowed only three hits and recorded 12 strikeouts over seven innings, effectively stifling the Cubs’ offense. This marked the Reds’ first win against the Cubs this year, following a four-game sweep by the Cubs at Wrigley Field in May.
The Cubs managed only four hits in the entire game. Seiya Suzuki accounted for two of those hits, including a double in the second inning. Ian Happ contributed the other hit off Greene, a single to lead off the fifth inning. Happ also drew Greene’s only walk of the game.
Pitching Performances
Greene’s outing was particularly effective, with Cubs hitters appearing to be fooled by his pitches. Several of his 12 strikeouts were on sliders or splitters that were significantly outside the strike zone. This performance marked the most strikeouts by a starter against the Cubs this season, surpassing Kyle Harrison‘s 11 strikeouts in May.
For the Cubs, Shōta Imanaga pitched for five innings, allowing one run on seven hits. The lone run came from a solo home run by Elly De La Cruz in the fifth inning. Imanaga’s outing was described as reasonably strong despite allowing multiple hits and running many long counts. He tied Jon Lester for the most strikeouts in a similar outing, with seven.

Following Imanaga, Trent Thornton pitched a quick seventh inning, facing three batters and throwing only seven pitches to keep the score at 1-0. However, the Cubs’ bullpen struggled later in the game. Jake Woodford made his debut for the Cubs, striking out the first batter he faced, Ke’Bryan Hayes. After De La Cruz tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly, Woodford allowed a single, a two-run home run, and two more singles, contributing to the Reds extending their lead.
Offensive Highlights and Series Outlook
The Reds’ offense was sparked by Elly De La Cruz, whose solo home run in the fifth inning provided the game’s first run. De La Cruz also contributed a triple later in the game. The Cubs’ offensive struggles were highlighted by Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch, who combined to go 0-8 with five strikeouts.
The Reds’ pitching staff achieved a notable feat, shutting out the Cubs and recording 16 strikeouts in total. This surpassed a previous record of 13 strikeouts in a shutout against the Cubs, which had stood for nearly 63 years.
The Cubs will aim to even the series in the next game, which is scheduled for Saturday evening in Cincinnati. Javier Assad is set to start for the Cubs, while Nick Lodolo will take the mound for the Reds.

The Cubs currently trail the Brewers by 7.5 games in the standings. They hold a 2.5-game lead over the Cardinals in their division and are half a game ahead of the Phillies and Marlins for the top wild card spot. The next game is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. CT.
