Key Position Battles Expected at Training Camp
The New York Giants‘ 2026 training camp is approaching, and several position battles are anticipated to be more competitive than in recent years. While positions like quarterback and linebacker appear settled, the team has been actively adjusting its roster under coach John Harbaugh, creating opportunities for various players to compete for starting roles.
One notable competition is at cornerback. Free agent acquisition Greg Newsome II, a 2021 first-round pick, is vying for the starting spot against Deonte Banks, a 2023 first-round pick. Newsome began the spring as the starter, but Banks has reportedly adapted well to the new scheme and coaching, earning more first-team snaps during OTAs and minicamp. Additionally, 2026 second-round pick Colton Hood is also in contention and could challenge both players.
The defensive line is another area with significant competition, as the Giants need to identify three new starters. This follows the departures of Dexter Lawrence and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, along with an injury to Roy Robertson-Harris. Veteran nose tackle D.J. Reader is expected to secure one starting position. However, the spots next to him are open, with 2025 third-round pick Darius Alexander and veteran Shelby Harris having an inside track. Sam Roberts, one of the team’s first free agent signings, has yet to be seen this offseason, and rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis could emerge as a rotational player.
The wide receiver position is also in flux. The Giants need to replace Wan’Dale Robinson and manage the period until Malik Nabers can return to the field. The 90-man roster includes 14 receivers, featuring a mix of young talent like Malachi Fields and Calvin Austin III, alongside veteran players such as Odell Beckham Jr. and Ju-Ju Smith-Schuster. Other veterans like Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, and Isaiah Hodgins are also looking to prove their worth. The team’s priority is to build around Jaxson Dart, making the construction of the receiver room a key focus.
Breakout Candidates and Kicking Competition
Beyond the starting battles, some players are considered breakout candidates for the upcoming season. On offense, tight end Isaiah Likely is a player to watch. Coach Harbaugh is familiar with the 26-year-old former Ravens tight end, and the Giants appear to have a specific plan for him. Likely was the first player the Giants agreed to a deal with during the negotiating period and could become a primary option in the passing game. Quarterback Jaxson Dart has praised Likely’s unique movement and intelligence, noting his ability to find open zones against coverage and make plays.
On defense, safety Tyler Nubin is highlighted as a potential breakout player. The former second-round pick recorded 13 interceptions during his college career at Minnesota over four seasons but has yet to secure an interception in his first two NFL seasons. The presence of defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is expected to help Nubin and the rest of the secondary perform at their best.
The kicker position has been a long-standing issue for the Giants due to injuries to Graham Gano and inconsistent performance. The signing of veteran kicker Jason Sanders was initially thought to resolve the problem, but he was unexpectedly cut during the spring. The competition is now between three-game veteran Ben Sauls and undrafted rookie Dominic Zvada. The decision to choose between two inexperienced options for a specialist role has been noted as one of the significant surprises of the offseason.
