LSU head coach Lane Kiffin recently discussed his departure from Ole Miss, a move that occurred as the Ole Miss team was preparing for a College Football Playoff run. Kiffin accepted the LSU job, leading to an unprecedented transition. Following his departure, Pete Golding was promoted at Ole Miss, and Kiffin did not coach the team in the playoff.
The period leading up to Kiffin’s exit was marked by speculation. Rumors about his future circulated for weeks while Ole Miss was in the midst of an historic season. Both Florida and LSU pursued Kiffin, and Ole Miss offered a contract extension. Kiffin’s delay in signing the Ole Miss offer suggested his eventual departure.
Kiffin’s move to LSU, a rival of Ole Miss, created a complex situation. Most of his offensive staff followed him to LSU but also remained to coach Ole Miss during the playoff. Kiffin expressed a desire to coach in the playoff and discussed this with Ole Miss AD Keith Carter, which further complicated the situation.
Speaking on Thursday, Kiffin acknowledged some regrets regarding how the situation unfolded. He stated, “I wish I would have gone in when I met with Keith and said, ‘I’ve made the decision to go,’ I wish I would have just said, ‘Hey, I’d like to coach the team,’ and he’d say, ‘No.’ And I’d say, ‘Hey, OK, I appreciate it.’ [I wish I’d] move on [and] never even discussed it again.”
Reflections and Social Media
Kiffin also addressed comments he made in a Vanity Fair interview earlier in the year concerning recruiting at Ole Miss. He reiterated previous statements, acknowledging that his remarks about diversity in Oxford making recruiting more challenging compared to Baton Rouge were a mistake. He reflected on the decision, stating, “I made a challenging decision and change. I think as I look back to that, I thought I could find a way for everybody to understand. Now as I look back later on, that was never going to happen.”
During his appearance at SEC Media Days, Kiffin discussed his decision to step away from social media. He explained that his son, Knox, challenged him to stop using social media, which he did in May. Kiffin noted, “Really it just started with my son, Knox, saying ‘you’re on social media all the time, I bet you can’t get off’. If you’ve followed me, you know that betting me is a good way to do it.” He added that subtracting things from his life has led to positive outcomes.
Kiffin also shared a perspective influenced by watching a Hulk Hogan documentary and the loss of his parents. He mentioned, “I made a decision that I changed jobs, and as I get older and I go through things and losing both parents… I watched the Hulk Hogan special. I realized something. I was, like: We’re all going to die. And so some of the things that we put importance on, we worry about, and what this person says and that, really aren’t going to matter.”
The LSU coach also commented on the proposed “Lane Kiffin Rule,” a provision in a Senate bill designed to prevent in-season coaching moves. Despite the rule being named after him, Kiffin expressed support for it, believing it could help future coaches avoid similar predicaments. He noted that in the NFL, coaches are not typically put in such situations due to calendar and movement rules. He hopes that changes will be made for coaches in college sports.
The upcoming 2026 college football season will feature a matchup between LSU and Ole Miss in Oxford during Week 3. This game is anticipated to be one of the most watched of the year due to the history between Kiffin and his former team.
The tension between the two programs was highlighted by a recent anecdote from Kiffin, who revealed he still had access to security cameras at his former home in Oxford, which was purchased by Pete Golding. Kiffin recounted using this access to monitor Golding’s movements during a recruiting trip, telling his LSU staff, “He can’t be wherever it was at this recruit’s house. He’s on my couch, I just saw him walk in.”
