St. Louis Cardinals star Jordan Walker wins Home Run Derby

St. Louis Cardinals star Jordan Walker secured a significant win in the Home Run Derby, earning a prize that exceeded his current season’s salary. Walker’s victory on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia saw him defeat hometown favorite Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Walker’s performance included hitting six consecutive home runs in his final swings, completing an impressive comeback. His win earned him $1 million, which is more than double his $799,400 salary from the Cardinals for the current season, according to Spotrac.
Derby Highlights and Fan Reactions
The Home Run Derby featured a total prize pool of $2.5 million. As the winner, Walker received $1 million, while Schwarber, as the runner-up, took home $500,000. The remaining six participants each received $150,000.
During the event, Tampa Bay Rays star Junior Caminero hit the longest home run of the night, measuring 491 feet, for which he was awarded $100,000.
The Philadelphia crowd, known for its vocal support of local players, booed Walker during the final. Despite this, Walker expressed appreciation for the fans’ passion for their team. He commented on the field after his victory, stating, “I was once told you don’t boo nobody. So it feels pretty good.”
Schwarber began the final round with 11 home runs on 15 swings, setting a challenging target. Walker initially struggled, hitting only six home runs in his first 12 swings, but then launched six consecutive blasts to secure the win.
Walker reflected on the experience, saying, “I can’t even describe how it means to win it. It was a lot of swings, a lot of pressure, but I think I just had fun no matter what. Like, every round, I was having a good time.”
The Philadelphia crowd’s booing of non-Phillies players was a notable aspect of the event. Some social media users expressed disapproval, while others defended it as characteristic of Philadelphia’s sports culture. One common retort from Philadelphians was, “If you don’t get booed in Philly, you’re not an All-Star.”
Players who were booed, including Walker, appeared to take it in stride and engage with the atmosphere. The event was broadcast on Netflix and included commentary from Will Ferrell.
Walker’s Season Performance
Walker, who is 24 years old, has emerged as a key player for the Cardinals this year, earning his first All-Star Game selection. He was considered a top prospect when he debuted in 2023, where he recorded a .276 batting average with 16 home runs and 51 RBI in 117 games.
Following his rookie season, Walker experienced a period of struggle. In 2024, he played in 51 games, hitting .201 with five home runs. In 2025, he played 111 games, achieving a .215 batting average with six home runs.
His current season marks a return to strong form. In 93 games, Walker holds a .294 batting average with 22 home runs, and his 74 RBI lead the major leagues. The 6-foot-6 right fielder’s performance has contributed to the Cardinals’ success, with the team currently holding a 50-45 record, placing them third in the NL Central and in contention for a Wild Card spot.
Walker is scheduled to represent the National League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
