Pogacar’s Dominant Performance
Tadej Pogacar achieved a significant milestone by securing his fifth victory in the Tour de France, matching the record held by cyclists such as Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Induráin. This win places him among the most successful competitors in the Tour’s history. The 2026 race, which saw stifling temperatures and heatwaves, culminated in Pogacar’s win.
Pogacar demonstrated a dominant performance throughout the Tour, setting record times on challenging climbs like the Col du Tourmalet and Alpe d’Huez. He also supported his teammate, Isaac del Toro, who finished third in the general classification. His overall victory margin was nearly six and a half minutes, and he claimed five stage wins. Van der Poel and Pogacar broke away on the final climb of the Butte de Montmartre, working together in the last 9 km. Despite the chasing pack closing in, Van der Poel held on for the stage victory, with Pogacar finishing safely to confirm his overall win.
Merckx, a celebrated figure in cycling, expressed his belief that Pogacar will surpass the current record, stating, “I don’t think he’ll be content just to draw level with me and the other champions. He’ll soon break our record for Tour victories.”
The success of Pogacar and his UAE Emirates XRG team has also brought renewed attention to past controversies involving his team manager, Mauro Gianetti. Gianetti addressed these concerns, describing himself as a “victim” of past scandals, such as the Saunier Duval incident in 2008, where riders on his team faced doping allegations. He stated, “I made the mistake of taking them in my team. I should have reacted differently, been clearer with the press, explained that I was a victim.”

Concerns regarding Pogacar’s entourage led to night-time tests conducted by the Independent Testing Agency (ITA). These tests, authorized by a Paris judge and supported by Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme and the UCI, were described by the UCI as “an exceptional measure, reserved for limited and justified circumstances.”
Pogacar accepted the testing, stating, “If this is necessary to prove that we are riding clean, then I totally accept it. I commit to it.” The ITA has indicated that no public communication is made regarding negative results, and there is no specific date from which all tests can be definitively considered negative. This situation leaves the achievements of Pogacar and Vingegaard in a state of uncertainty.
Looking ahead, Pogacar is anticipated to participate in August’s Vuelta a España, aiming to win the only Grand Tour title he has not yet claimed.
