First day of camp sets tone
The Seattle Seahawks commenced their training camp on Saturday at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, drawing a significant crowd of fans. Head coach Mike Macdonald described the opening day as “great,” noting the electric atmosphere provided by supporters.
Macdonald acknowledged that while some miscues and mistakes occurred, the team’s effort and energy were paramount after a lengthy break. He emphasized that the focus was on the non-negotiables of their playing style rather than immediate perfect execution.
Player highlights and contract discussions
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the All-Pro receiver, received an enthusiastic reception from fans upon entering the practice field. His presence generated considerable excitement, particularly among children who formed a tunnel for players. During practice, Smith-Njigba’s leaping sideline grab on a pass from Sam Darnold drew one of the day’s loudest cheers. Following practice, he was among the players who signed autographs, again receiving strong ovations.
Smith-Njigba’s elevated status follows a successful 2025 season where he was named AP Offensive Player of the Year and became a Super Bowl champion. He also shared his perspective on the team’s mindset for the 2026 season, stating, “It feels like a revamp, a new energy in the building, honestly.” He added that the team is ready to put the past behind them and focus on the future, particularly attacking training camp.
Running back was identified as a position to watch during camp. With last year’s starter, Kenneth Walker III, having departed in free agency, and Zach Charbonnet recovering from an ACL injury, the group features new additions. First-round pick Jadarian Price and free-agent signing Emanuel Wilson are competing alongside George Holani. Price, a rookie, made an impact with an impressive catch-and-run and a significant gain from an inside run that he bounced outside with a jump cut. Wilson also contributed with a long run, and Holani made several notable runs.
Devon Witherspoon, a 2023 first-round pick, demonstrated high energy on the first day. He was observed flying into the backfield, forcing Sam Darnold to throw the ball away, and celebrating with teammate Julian Love after a pass breakup. Witherspoon’s active participation is notable as he is eligible for a new contract after playing three seasons. General manager John Schneider and the Seahawks have expressed their intention to sign him to a multi-year extension. Macdonald commented on Witherspoon’s contract situation, expressing confidence in the process and noting that Witherspoon continues to practice with dedication.
The team’s pass rush also showed promise, with Witherspoon executing a blitz that would have been a sack if contact were permitted. The pass rush was strong last season, culminating in a six-sack performance in the Super Bowl, and the initial practice indicated it could be a significant factor in 2026.
Returning players and team outlook
Several players who missed parts of the offseason program were back in action. Among them were receiver Tory Horton, whose rookie season was cut short by a shin injury, and tight end AJ Barner, who underwent two surgeries after the season to address injuries he played through. Veteran tight end Eric Saubert and tackle Josh Jones also returned after missing time. Macdonald expressed satisfaction with the return of these players, noting their participation in individual programs as they ramp up to full activity.
Linebacker Ernest Jones conveyed a message to the team that past victories would not contribute to current success, emphasizing a focus on the present. The Seahawks are scheduled to raise a banner before facing the Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowl LXII at the start of the season.
